English Romantic Painter, 1775-1851, British land- and seascape artist. Born in London the son of a barber, Turner was precociously talented. He entered the RA Schools in 1789, had a drawing exhibited at the academy in 1790, and was elected a full academician in 1802. He became professor of perspective in 1807. A prolific artist of amazing range of subject and style, he began work in water-colours, quickly founding both a reputation and a fortune, which made him independent of changing public taste. His work was not appreciated by everyone, but his supporters included Thomas Lawrence, John Ruskin, and the earl of Egremont. Ferdinand Theodor Hildebrandt, född 2 juli 1804 i Stettin, död 29 september 1874 i Dusseldorf, var en tysk målare. Hildebrandt började sina konstnärliga studier i Berlin under Wilhelm Schadow, vilken han 1826 följde till Dusseldorf, och blev en av den där grundade skolans mest framstående lärjungar. 1825 framträdde han med Faust, 1826 med Cordelia och kung Lear och 1828 med Tankred döpande Klorinda. Ännu större popularitet vann han 1835 för Mordet på kung Edvards söner. Bland hans genrebilder har i synnerhet Krigaren och hans son (1832, Berlins nationalgalleri) blivit känd. Hildebrandt, som för övrigt utförde illustrationer och porträtt, kallades på sin tid realist, men han var knappast fri från den melodramatiska ton och den sentimentala inställning, som tillhörde skolan.
Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze
German-born American Romantic Painter, 1816-1868,American painter of German birth. When he was nine, Leutze's family emigrated to America and settled in Philadelphia. In 1834 he began to study art with the draughtsman John Rubens Smith (1775-1849). Leutze developed his skills as a portrait painter by taking likenesses to be engraved for publication in the National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans and then working as an itinerant painter. He also experimented with imaginative compositions, such as the Poet's Dream (Philadelphia, PA Acad. F.A.). Philadelphia patrons sponsored his study in Europe, and in 1841 he enrolled at the K?nigliche Kunstakademie in Desseldorf. Although attempts at history painting won approval in Germany and in the USA, Leutze left the academy in 1843. He travelled for two years in Germany and Italy, during which time he became convinced of the importance of freedom and democracy, which he believed to be fundamental institutions of the American political system.
